A letter to Mr. Fortuna Senior Public Health Inspector York Region
Dear Mr. Fortuna

I am not sure yet if you really are my fortuna (in Latin it means luck). I received yesterday, rather late, at the farm the package of court documents relating to your intentions, I assume to arrest me as soon I appear in York region with Farm Fresh milk. I am pleased for you, that you achieved your goal in front of a judge without the need of me or cow share owners appearing to argue your case against me. It appears as if you are on a mission as the defender of public health. As a paid government employee, I guess that is what one does when there seems unlimited public money available. Unfortunately, there are others who are, as well, part of the public you are supposed to serve and be accountable to.

In your court application, you use many messages from our website. This is good . It gives me the assurance you are reading and informing yourself regarding the whole issue surrounding the milk. However, there are several arguments you made in order to sway the judge that the public should be aware of:

--  “Raw milk is a health hazard generally and specifically to the  inhabitants of York Region”
--  “Fortuna ( that means you ) is of the belief that  Mr. Schmidt’s sale of unpasteurized milk poses a health risk to the people of York Region”

My question to you, not as a Government official  but as a human being, is: Do you actually believe what you are saying and doing?  Have we gone so far, that common sense cannot exist within Public Servants. (Public servant means serving the public.)
I totally respect your responsibility. I also respect your concern for the health of the public.

However, you are looking in the wrong direction. And that is why we are taking a stand for our own health. We cannot trust public health because they do not understand the real concerns of many people. It needs willingness to learn, willingness to question the status quo and willingness to act based on consciousness and not based on position and paycheque.

I know this is a lot to swallow, Mr. Fortuna, but Civil Disobedience  has been at times the only option left to bring about change. .Whatever needs to happen will happen. Lets work on it.

Give my regards to everybody

Your Friend Michael Schmidt

"Every person above the ordinary has a certain mission that they are called to fulfill.

In the realm of ideas everything depends on enthusiasm... in the real world all rests on perseverance.

Nothing is more terrible than to see ignorance in action."

Goethe

I hope/trust/pray that with perseversance and the dedication of this man who is "above the Ordinary" that common sense will prevail over ignorance and corporate greed. I am appalled at this colossal miscarriage of justice and misuse of our tax dollars. If I want to drink milk from a cow, what "democratically' voted in government agency has the right to tell me that I cannot consume this healthy food? What incredibly patriachal controlling nonsense is this? It's time for our elected representatives to come to their senses. My grandparents must be rolling in their graves or laughing hysterically at the stupidity of mankind. God save us all against greed cloaked in misguided patronization, and bless you Michael for your courage and conviction.
